My research reveals that our current science is not certain how these biological molecules use the light energy that is absorbed. A common theory is that the cytochrome enzymes in the mitochondria translate the directly absorbed light energy into more cellular energy, through the production of high energy molecular bonds in the process of oxidative phosphorylation. Furthermore, I like to speculate that DNA and RNA molecules can use this light energy, akin to a molecular wifi, to communicate throughout the body, functioning as the body’s electromagnetic control system. In any case, we do know that somehow the light changes the physiology of the body at a fundamental level, a process often called photo-biomodulation. What we see as an end result are changes in cellular function including more rapid cell growth, anti-inflammatory action, faster wound healing, reduced scarring, and recovery of nerve function, just to name a few.
